UT-Battelle's plan for ORNL is guided by the commitment to achieving Simultaneous Excellence in the areas of Science and Technology, Laboratory Operations, and Community Service.


Science and Technology
Expanded Research Capabilities. Expand ORNL's research capabilities in the areas of Materials Synthesis, Ecological & Health Effects of Environmental Pollutants, and Advanced High Speed Computing & Networking
Stronger University Partnerships. Establish additional relationships with major research universities to generate more joint appointments, collaborative research, graduate student opportunities, and regional support for ORNL
Support DOE Mission Areas. Ensure that ORNL maintains a contribution of relevant and impactful programs to DOE's mission areas

  Integrated Safety Management. Build upon ORNL's existing program with an emphasis on extending implementation to the benchtop
More R&D per Dollar Spent. Engage all staff to achieve overhead savings that will provide more resources for discretionary investments in capability development and infrastructure revitalization
Revitalization of ORNL Facilities. Provide new facilities as a commitment to the Lab's future

Spallation Neutron Source
  SNS Construction. Complete construction safely, delivering technical, cost and schedule commitments

SNS User Program. Promote outreach and provide for effective and convenient access for all potential SNS users

  World-Class Facilities. Develop new and expanded capabilities in neutron scattering, nanoscience, microcharacterization, heavy ion physics, and terascale computing
Leadership in Cross Disciplinary Research. Integrate strengths in materials, chemical, and computational sciences to provide innovative solutions to national problems
Enhanced Scientific Partnerships. Strengthen ORNL's scientific impact through expanded partnerships and user programs

Energy and Engineering Technologies
  Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicles. Reduce energy consumption and emissions from transportation systems
Heavy Vehicle Safety. Improve highway safety for high-efficiency truck transportation
Distributed Power Generation. Increase the efficiency and reliability of energy consumption through the deployment of advanced power generation technologies
Integrated High-Efficiency Buildings. Reduce the impact on building energy consumption and emissions
Affordable Alternative Fuels. Reduce carbon emissions from energy conversion and consumption for power generation and transportation
Revitalization of Safe Nuclear Power. Nurture nuclear power as a viable option to reduce carbon emissions

Biological and Environmental Sciences
  Environmental Change. Develop large-scale experimental facilities and modeling capabilities to study effects of environmental change
Environmental Quality. Understand, from the level of molecules to ecosystems, the response to pollutants in complex biological systems
Systems Biology. Develop core competencies in Systems Biology, including genomics, structural biology, computational biology, and technology

National Security
  ORNL and Y-12 Partnership. Combine the expertise of Y-12 and ORNL for security and advanced technology customers
National Security Portfolio. Grow the Lab's National Security research program, including partnerships with other national laboratories and the National Transportation Research Center

  Economic Partnerships. Establish ORNL as an active participant with state and regional economic development groups
Education Partnerships. Expand access to the Lab's resources through partnerships with ORAU universities and K-12 schools
Civic and Cultural Partnerships. Promote employee participation in community's cultural and charitable activities

Technology Transfer and Economic Development
  Accelerated Technology Transfer. Promote technology transfer through creation of Regional Center for Entrepreneurial Growth with Technology 2020
Expanded Corporate Investment. Provide access to $100 million venture capital fund network to assist start-up companies
Industrial Outreach. Expand technical assistance to business and industry
